Need to put your iPhone or iPad into DFU mode? Then you’ve come to the right place.
DFU mode creates a connection between the device and iTunes, allowing you to restore your device when all else fails. This can be tricky, so be prepared to do it a few times before you get it right:
How to Place your iPhone into DFU Mode:
The later iPhones are slightly different from the earlier ones:
iPhone 7 and Above:
- Connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes
- Turn your iPhone off
- Hold the On/Off button for 3 seconds and then hold the Volume Down button at the same time
- Hold both for 10 seconds (if the Apple logo appears, start again as you’ve gone too far)
- Now release the On/Off button and keep holding the Volume button for another 5 seconds (if the Connect to iTunes screen appears, you’ve gone too far – start again)
- If the screen remains black, your device has successfully gone into DFU mode
We’re not done yet
iPhone 6 and Lower:
- Connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes
- Power your iPhone off by holding the On/Off button for 3 seconds and then slide right on the Power Off slider
- Hold down the On/Off button for 3 seconds and then press the Home button at the same time
- Hold them down for 10 seconds ( if the Apple logo appears, start over as you’ve gone too far )
- Release the On/Off button and continue to hold the Home button for 5 more seconds – if the Connect to iTunes screen appears, you’ve gone too far – start again)
- If your screen remains black, it is in DFU mode
And it is, but it does take some patience to get the timing right. You should now see a message in iTunes telling you your iPhone has been detected. Now you can restore it
If any logos appear on your device screen, you are NOT in DFU; instead, your iPhone is in Recovery mode. If that works for you, good. If not, go back and try to get back into DFU mode again.
